How do I remove subscribers from a list?

You can remove subscribers from lists by changing their subscriber status to "deleted" or "unsubscribed." This can be done as a bulk removal of email addresses, or you can select individual subscribers from a list.

The methods explained below for removing subscribers will not permanently delete subscriber details from your account. The only way to achieve that is by deleting an entire list, or lists, that they are on.

ON THIS PAGE:

Deleted versus unsubscribed

As mentioned above, there are two options for removing subscribers from lists, and also two methods for completing the task: bulk removal or individual removal. Before you do either one, you'll need to decide which removal option suits you, as explained below.

Deleting subscribers

When a subscriber's status is changed to deleted:

  • they will no longer receive any emails sent to the list
  • they will not count toward your subscriber total for billing purposes
  • it does not add them to the suppression list
  • their subscriber activity for campaign reports is preserved.

NOTE: Because deleting a subscriber does not add them to the suppression list, it means their status will be changed back to "Active" if they're accidentally re-imported.

Unsubscribing subscribers

When a subscriber's status is changed to unsubscribed:

  • they will no longer receive any emails sent to the list
  • they will also be unsubscribed from any other lists for your client that they are subscribed to, except for lists where the unsubscribe setting has been changed
  • they will not count toward your subscriber total for billing purposes
  • they will be added to the suppression list
  • their subscriber activity for campaign reports will be preserved.

TIP: A common approach is to use "unsubscribed" if someone has asked to be removed, and "deleted" if you have chosen to remove them for any reason. That way you can easily tell the difference later on.

Removing subscribers in bulk

Follow the steps below to remove multiple subscribers from one list, or all of your client's lists. You will need to have the subscriber's email addresses ready to complete this task.

  1. Open Manage Subscribers and select the subscriber list you want to remove people from.
  2. On the list details page click Remove subscribers in the right sidebar.
  3. Type or copy-and-paste the subscriber email addresses into the text box, one address per line.
  4. Select one of the remove options, explained below, then click Remove subscribers.

The difference between the remove options is:

  • All my lists – Changes the subscriber status to unsubscribed.
  • This list only – Changes the subscriber status to deleted.

Removing individual subscribers

Follow the steps below to search a single list for a subscriber you want to remove, either by deleting or unsubscribing them.

  1. Open Manage Subscribers, then click a list name to open the list details page.
  2. Enter a subscriber's email address or name in the "Search list" field and click Search.
  3. Select the checkbox on the right of the subscriber you want to remove. This will display a "Move selected to" menu in the toolbar below:

  4. From the menu, select Deleted or Unsubscribed, then click Move.

NOTE: Deleting a subscriber does not add them to the suppression list. If you later import a file that unintentionally contains email addresses of deleted subscribers, it will change their status from "Deleted" back to "Active."
